This post is confined to the songs where one version is sung by Mukesh and the other version by Lata Mangeshkar. Another example is the song ‘Ek din bik jaayega maati ke mol…’ from the film Dharam Karam (1975) which has the main version sung by mukesh but there are other smaller versions in the voices of Sushma Shreshtha and Kishore Kumar with a few lines sung by Asha Bhonsle as well. Similarly the song ‘Jiyen toh jiyen kaise bin aapke…’ from the film Saajan (1991) was sung by Alka Yagnik, S P Balasubramanian, Kumar Sanu and Pankaj Udhas. There are rare instances when more than two singers have also sung the same song- for instance- ‘Zindagi ek safar hai suhana …’ from the film Andaz (1971) has been sung as solos by Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle and Mohammed Rafi. Depending on the setting of the story, the different versions at times had different lyrics for the entire song or changes in only one stanza. Either both versions are solos or at times one version could be a solo while the other a duet. These versions could be happy or sad depending on the situation in the story and the characters lip-syncing to the song. Dual versions of the same song sung by two different singers remains an interesting and intriguing aspect of our films and is indeed a double joy for the listener.
